The Dalton Police Department is asking for the public’s help to identify two men who used some slick diversion tactics to steal $1,000 in gift cards from the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The men were recorded by the store’s surveillance system.

The incident happened on Wednesday at approximately 3 p.m. The two men pushed a shopping cart with diapers and other items in it to a checkout and began having their purchases scanned. Early in the transaction, one of the men asked the clerk to load $500 each onto two Walmart gift cards. The clerk scanned and loaded the cards. Then, once most of their items were scanned, the men asked the clerk to scan a case of Gatorade drinks that was underneath the shopping cart. While the clerk walked around to the other side of the counter in order to do so, the man reached over and hit a button on the register screen to cash out the transaction. When the register popped open and the receipt printed, the man grabbed the receipt and the two loaded gift cards. The man then tried to convince the clerk that they had already paid and showed the receipt. When challenged by the clerk and the store manager, the men walked out of the store with the gift cards and receipt. They left in a silver passenger car. Before the store was able to deactivate the gift cards, they were used at the Walmart store in East Ridge.

The suspect who cashed out the transaction and took the gift cards is a black male who wore a blue and white shirt, blue shorts, and a black baseball cap that appeared to be a Chicago White Sox cap. The man with him was a black male wearing a yellow shirt and jeans. There was a third person driving their vehicle.

Anyone who recognizes these suspects or who has information on this crime is asked to please contact Detective Charles Williams at (706) 278-9085 extension 9280
