World War II Veteran Retired From Provident And Served On Multiple Boards In Chattanooga

Paul M. Hicks, 96, of Chattanooga passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020.

Paul was born on April 22, 1924 and was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. He was a graduate of Central High School in 1942. He married Wilma Dean (Hamilton) Hicks on March 29, 1947. They were married for 39 years until her death in 1986. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving as a medic throughout Europe after landing in Normandy, France during World War II. He returned to Chattanooga and had a 40 plus year career at Provident Life Insurance where he retired as a Vice President.

Paul was a member of Eastdale Church of Christ and East Ridge Church of Christ. He served as a song director for over 80 years and spent time as a youth minister. He was a tireless supporter of church outreach missions and participated in trips to Russia and Nicaragua. He served on the boards of multiple local organizations including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boyd Buchanan School and Martin-Boyd Christian Home, where he was a founding board member. He was a member of the YMCA for 75 years and the Sports Barn for 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Dean Hicks; parents Nathan A. and Eunice Buchanan Hicks; brothers Nathan A. Hicks, Jr., Freed H. Hicks and David Hicks; sister Irene Buckner; daughter-in-law Misty Mayo and grandson Joseph Cole Parrott.

Survivors include two sons, Perry Mayo (Kaye) and Billy E. Parrott, Jr. (Rebecca Ann); grandchildren Paul Mayo (Andrea), Kristi McAllister (Todd), Hailey Elizabeth Parrott, Emily Ann Carroll (Christopher), Ashley Prater (Robert) and Allison Bogle; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30 at East Ridge Church of Christ at 951 McBrien Road with Ministers Charles Cochran and Raleigh Wooten officiating. Entombment will be at Lakewood Memory Gardens East with Minister John Cupp officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29 at East Ridge Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Martin Boyd Christian Home, Boyd Buchanan School or Big Brothers/Big Sisters Chattanooga.
