Roy Exum: School Boards Matter

When two new districts appear on the next Hamilton County ballot, voters should be forewarned that there are those who walk among us who, to be polite, ain’t like us. Two new districts will mean two new county commissioners and it will also mean two new school board members where, to be polite, there are already some who don’t think the way I do.

“No matter,” you might say, “there are enough good ones to outvote the zanies,” but that's not true. Witness the outlandish search for a school superintendent where everybody with any sense can recognize Justin Robertson is a home-grown prize. But, no, the school board creates a search when we attract the disgruntled; the best candidates are happy where they are. And it gets worse. Rhonda Thurman is the best of the bunch and if she weren’t a beautician she would have pulled her hair out long ago.

In case you haven’t noticed, school boards across the country are under fire for their “wokeness.” Unfortunately, a deluge of candidates “not like us” have infiltrated school board ranks because too few people care. Now good communities are paying a handsome price for “woke” decisions … the insane Critical Race Theory is tearing some communities apart and as counties “wake up” to identify what “woke” really is, it’s too late.

Williamson County, its courthouse in Franklin about 30 miles from Nashville, is one of the hottest growth areas in the state. The school board is in no way similar to the townsfolk and last week there was an open meeting that featured an array of local celebs who quite frankly have had enough of the foolishness.

Clay Travis told the crowd of several hundred, “Like a lot of you, I paid attention to who I voted for governor. I paid attention to who I voted for mayor, congressman, and senator. I never ever thought about who I voted for a school board election my entire life,” Travis told the audience. “I know that that was a flaw now. I know that not being as engaged as a parent allowed what has happened over the last 18 months to happen.”

Chris Butler, who writes for the online website The Tennessee Star, filed this report:

WILLIAMSON COUNTY RESIDENTS RESIST ‘WOKE’ PUBLIC SCHOOL IDEOLOGIES

By Chis Butler, The Tennessee Star, November 4, 2021

FRANKLIN, Tennessee – Clay Travis, John Rich, and other well-known speakers highlighted an event Tuesday where organizers urged Williamson County residents to rise up against woke ideologies in the public school system.

Members of Williamson Families, a Political Action Committee (PAC), also pressed the several hundred audience members to stand up to — and even run against — school board members who neglect their constituents’ most basic concerns. Organizers held the event at Liberty Hall at The Factory in Franklin.

Travis, whose children attend Williamson County Schools and who co-hosts The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, said the woke ideology is destined to destroy itself — but only if frustrated Americans stand up and say, “no more.”

“Like a lot of you, I paid attention to who I voted for governor. I paid attention to who I voted for mayor, congressman, and senator. I never ever thought about who I voted for a school board election my entire life,” Travis told the audience. I know that that was a flaw now. I know that not being as engaged as a parent allowed what has happened over the last 18 months to happen.”

Hollywood actress Leigh-Allyn Baker, who spoke out against a COVID-19 mask mandate at a recent Williamson County School Board meeting, also appeared onstage.

“I went from America’s favorite Disney mom to America’s favorite domestic terrorist,” Baker said in jest.

The Bible, Baker went on to say, commands people in several passages — 365 of them — not to fear. “God has given you a do not be afraid for every day of the year,” Baker said. So surely you can find your bravery for such a time as this.”

Robby Starbuck, a Republican running to replace U.S. Representative Jim Cooper (D-TN-05) also spoke, alongside his wife Landon. “We are going to say no to the people who want to control us. We are going to say no to the school systems who want to go and indoctrinate our children,” Robby Starbuck said.

“We are going to say no to every level of government that wants to tell us where we can work, when we can work, if we can open our doors, if we can’t open our doors, if we have to wear a mask inside or outside. It doesn’t matter. We say no.”

Landon Starbuck, meanwhile, told audience members about what she said are globalist goals to take away parental rights, destabilize the nuclear family, and divide families against themselves.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) endorsed Robby Starbuck’s candidacy in June.

Williamson Families, according to its website, advocate for strong family values, individual responsibility, respect for tradition, and innovation for the future.
