The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team hosts its first event since 2015 welcoming 12 teams for the Chattanooga Classic. The field tackles the challenging Black Creek Club layout Monday and Tuesday.
It looks to be a hotly-contested event with five top 100 schools all closely clustered entered – No. 81 Western Kentucky, No. 84 Iowa, No. 86 ETSU, No. 90 Middle Tennessee & No. 91 Chattanooga. A sixth, Colorado State, sits just outside that ranking at 101.
The Mocs have two runners-up, one third and two fourth-place finishes this year.
The third and two fourths have come this month with some stellar individual play. There have been four top 10s (3 top 3s) by three different Mocs and seven top 20s spread out over four golfers.
Freshman Beatriz Barrios highlights that run earning Southern Conference Golfer of the Week honors for her play last time out. Barrios has back-to-back top 3s. First by a Moc since assistant coach Monica San Juan ‘19 in Feb. 2018. She has three for the season. The last time a Moc had three or more was four by Emily McLennan ‘16 in 2015-16.
The squad's 298.44 scoring average in March lowered its season number to 301.44. Three Mocs bettered their averages over that span: Barrios (74.56), Esme Hamilton (74.78) and Daphne van Son (75.33).
The 2-day, 54-hole event opens with an 9 a.m., shotgun start Monday and ending with a final 18 Tuesday. Live scoring and pairings are available on the team’s GoMocs.com schedule page and linked above.
