CSO Presents Appalachian Spring Oct. 2

  • Friday, September 24, 2021

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will begin the 21/22 Chamber Series with a performance of Appalachian Spring on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Chattanooga State Community College Humanities Theatre. The evening will feature local composer Ben Van Winkle’s Pure Music No. 1, contemporary Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga’s Succubus Moon, and Copland’s joyous ode to American life, Appalachian Spring.

“We are excited to present this program to you after it was postponed in 2020 due to the global pandemic,” says CSO Music Director Kayoko Dan. “It’s always so fun to feature one of our own composers, and I’m excited to bring you Chattanooga composer and cellist Ben Van Winkle’s Pure Music No. 1, which displays a unique musical language and ambience. Eleanor Alberga’s Succubus Moon will feature an oboe and string quartet with a mysterious and beautiful oboe sonority and diverse color provided by the strings. The final work on the program is Copland’s Appalachian Spring in its original instrumentation. This work was originally written as a ballet, and it has wonderful characters, memorable melodies, distinct rhythms, and texture.”

To ensure a safe experience for all audience members and staff, attendees will need to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the concert to enter the venue. Masks must also be worn over the nose and mouth throughout the duration of the concert. More details on health and safety measures are available at chattanoogasymphony.org/concert-health-safety.

Tickets for Appalachian Spring are $32 and can be purchased at www.chattanoogasymphony.org. Subscriptions to all five performances in the Chamber Series are also available for $125 and can be purchased by calling 267-8583 or in-person at the CSO Box Office at 736 Georgia Ave., Suite 101. The box office is currently opened for limited hours Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
