Chattanooga attorney and author Maury Nicely led a group Saturday on a walking tour of the downtown area. Mr. Nicely focused on Andrews’ Raiders and Civil War Chattanooga giving historic information about Union station and the General. Mr. Nicely is author of the book, “Chattanooga Walking Tour Historic Guide.”
The tour started at the Brabson house on 5th Street.
Mr. Nicely pointed at that D.B. Lovemans, whose family ran a department store here for years, once owned lived in the mansion.
The guide gave extensive history of the Hamilton County Courthouse, Old First Methodist Church whose entrance way is still standing, nearby Dome Building, St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church which is next door to the Carnegie Library. Mr. Nicely also shared a brief history of the Crutchfield House that later became the Read House and many other landmarks. Many famous people have stayed in the hotel including President Ronald Reagan.
The walking tour made its way thru downtown by the former location of First Presbyterian Church on Market Street and ended in front of the Bethlehem Wiley United Methodist Church on Lookout Street. The structure once housed Chattanooga’s first school house.
The walking tour was sponsored by the Charles H. Coolidge Medal of Honor Heritage Center. Education Director Hannah Sher said there are other historic event planned including more walking tours.
