James "Jay" Ritchie Bartley, 65, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 29, 2023, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Ruthie Bartley.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Janet Hays Bartley; beloved daughter, Abbey Ruth (Jordan) Mulkey; light of his life granddaughter, Adalynn Claire Mulkey; brother Gary (Beverlee) Bartley; and many treasured family members and friends.

Jay was a devoted follower and servant of His Savior, Jesus Christ and a faithful member of Hickory Valley Christian Church in Chattanooga for 60 years, serving an an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, sound technician, and youth leader. In the past few years, he joined, served, and worshipped at Silverdale Baptist Church.

Jay was a 1975 graduate of Tyner High School and a graduate in Chemistry at UTC. He started working in high school in the chemistry field, and worked as a chemist for 50 years at Lutex in Chattanooga, Specialty Chemical in Cleveland, and ArrowStar in Dalton, GA.

Jay will be fondly remembered for being an avid reader, a UT Vols and Atlanta Braves fan, a history buff, a talented chef, and a lover of good music. His sarcasm and his never-ending inappropriate jokes and potty humor will be greatly missed.

Jay’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 5-8 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held at Hickory Valley Christian Church on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. with Dale Lovelady, Matty Finlay, and David Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.
