Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special one-hour, ranger-led program examining the role of hospitals in Chattanooga during the Civil War on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. Participants are asked to park at the 301-409 Collins St. Parking Lot adjacent to the Confederate cemetery on 5th Avenue, where the program will be held. (301-499 Collins St. in Chattanooga). Participants are welcome to bring a chair and water.
Officials said, "As battles began to rage in Tennessee in late 1862 and early 1863, Chattanooga’s location as a rail junction, away from the front, proved vital in housing locations for treating the wounded.
Chattanooga soon became a hotbed for hospitals. Some of which were former hotels and warehouses to some that were mere homes of residents. Come join a park ranger for this special look at some of the sites associated with treating the soldiers, both North and South, in their dire and some cases final moments."
