CHI Memorial Chest and Lung Cancer Center was rated in the top six percent of the country for lobectomy for lung cancer and in the top eight percent for esophagectomy surgeries. These ratings by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons place the practice among the elite for general thoracic surgery in the United States and Canada, officials said.

“We are proud to offer our community high quality, nationally recognized care that improves the outcomes for those with lung or esophageal cancer,” said Rob Headrick, MD, thoracic surgeon, CHI Memorial Chest and Lung Cancer Center.
“This recognition of our program is a testament to the dedication, hard work and excellence of our entire team.”

This is the sixth time the practice has received the top rating for lobectomy and the first time it’s received a rating for esophagectomy.

The ratings are based on audited mortality and major complications data from the past three years submitted to the STS General Thoracic Surgery Database. The data is then benchmarked against other programs across the US and Canada. A participant receives the top rating of three stars if there is at least 97.5 percent Bayesian probability that the participant’s score exceeds the STS mean score. STS publicly reports participant results for lobectomy for lung cancer and esophagectomy.
