CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Two teams in desperate need of a key Region 2-6A victory clashed at Bear Stadium Friday, with Farragut going back home with its first win of the season.
Posting the 18th win in 22 battles with Bradley Central, the Admirals scored more points than any of their previous outings this fall for a 28-20 winning tally.
The Bears slip to 2-4 on the campaign, plus 0-2 in region play, with tough games at Hardin Valley next week and Bearden to cap the season, plus hosting No.
4-ranked Cleveland Oct. 25 in league play.
Farragut (1-6, 1-2) now owns a tie-breaker over the Bears should it come down to it for a playoff spot, with Hardin Valley (Oct. 25) and third-ranked Maryville (Nov. 1) left in conference play.
The Admiral offense, which came in averaging just over 200 yards and 10 points an outing, exploded for 429 yards, including sophomore QB Corbin Hobson connecting on 20-of-24 passes for 326 yards and a pair of scores.
Senior Landon Collins pulled in nine aerials for 175 yards and two TDs, while classmate Robbie Jacobs made five catches for 97 yards, plus scored on a 12-yard reverse run.
Farragut gained 45 yards on the first two plays of the contest, but Bradley's defense stiffened for no gain on the next three snaps to take over on downs.
Debuting a new Wing-T style offense, the Bears marched 54 yards for the opening score with junior Kenyon Phelps carrying the rock on 7 of 8 plays, including the final five yards for to paydirt.
The Bear lead lasted just 21 seconds as Farragut answered on the first play after the ensuing kickoff when Hobson hit Collins for his second 74-yard touchdown of the season.
The boys from Knoxville never trailed after that, scoring again midway through the second half when Jacobs took the double-handoff and skirted around the left end for his 12-yard score.
The Admirals added another TD on their following series, covering 99 yards in just a half dozen plays with Hobson hitting Jacobs for 39, before finding Collins on throws of 13, 20 and 27 yards, which he carried over the goalline.
Getting the ball with 75 seconds to go in the half, Bradley got set back 10 yards on a holding penalty before senior Landon Scott broke free ona 17 -yard run. Phelps tacked on four more before freshman QB Tucker Cook hit senior Tyrese Stovall, who shook off a Farragut defender and raced 63 yards to the end zone with just 8.6 on the clock.
After the intermission, the hosts went three-and-out, but got a break three plays later when Hobson hit Jacobs for a six-yard gain, but Bear senior Jake Powell stripped the ball as he was making the tackle and pounced on it to set Bradley up at midfield.
The Bears needed just four plays to score with Phelps breaking free for 17 on the second snap and capping the drive from 29 yards out, less than four minutes into the second half.
The extra point attempt failed, leaving the Bears trailing 21-20.
Farragut capped the scoring in the final frame, putting together a seven-play, 52-yard march with Randon Miller bulling in from five yards out, with 6:52 remaining.
Keeping the ball on the ground, Bradley netted zero yards on six plays in its ensuing possession.
After forcing just the second punt by the visitors, the Bears last gasp saw Cook find Stovall for 12 yards, but time ran out before they could get off another play.
Carrying the load in the new offensive scheme, Phelps toted the rock 23 times for 173 yards and the two scores, while Scott gained 58 on eight carries.
Bradley threw the ball just three times with Stovall pulling two of them for 75 yards and the score.
