The Hillcrest Baptist Church in Ooltewah is honoring Pastor James Langston for over 70 years in the ministry, a few days before his 90th birthday. A reception will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 2–5 p.m. at the church at 6116 Hunter Road, and the public is invited.

Rev. Langston is a native of Strawberry Plains, Tn. The family lived in a three room house on his grandfather’s farm where he was raised. Langston graduated from Strong High School as Salutatorian and attended Carson – Newman College in Jefferson City, Tn.

At the age of 13, Rev. Langston accepted Christ, and in October, 1952, at the age of 17, Mr. Langston said he was called to preach. Rev. Langston delivered his first message at the Holston Baptist Church in Strawberry Plains.

Rev. Langston married the lady he called, “My Precious Mary – a faithful helpmate for nearly 63 years,” on March 21, 1953.

Rev. Langston has pastored churches, mostly in the south and with Rev. Garland Faw, established Camp Canaan in Ringgold, Georgia, which is still in operation today.

Rev. Langston was called to the Hillcrest Baptist Church in the summer of 2001 where he continues to preach.

Rev. Langston said, “I thank the church for all the love, kindness, prayers and encouragement they have given me and for the respect shown me as their pastor.”

Rev. Langston said, “I don’t know how long God will allow me to continue. This will probably be my last pastorate but I want to give my best in the last years. I need your prayers and your understanding.”

During the past 23 years under Rev. Langston’s leadership, Hillcrest Baptist Church built a new church building, renovated the fellowship hall, paved the parking lot and added additional Sunday School Classes.

Rev. Langston will celebrate his 90th birthday on Nov. 25, and friends are urged to send him a birthday card and best wishes.
