Cleveland State Community College's Workforce Development Department and Massey Electric have partnered for the past four years on a U.S. Department of Labor electrical apprenticeship program. They recently celebrated the progress of employees in the program and welcomed new apprentices.
Massey Electric employees receive at least 576 hours of classroom instruction and 8,000 hours of on-the-job-training over four years. Jesse Bunch, an instructor at Bradley Central High School, teaches the first two years of the program.
Tim Smith, Cleveland State Workforce Development adjunct faculty and Cleveland High School instructor, teaches the final two years. The classes are held in the Massey Electric classroom at the Partners in Industry and Education (PIE) Center in Cleveland.
“We are incredibly proud of all our electrical apprentice graduates from our Alcoa and Cleveland offices,” said Rick Heath, director of Training and Safety at Massey Electric. “These talented individuals are diligently working through their four-year Department of Labor certified program, and we are thrilled to honor their hard work and dedication.”
Three employees completed all four years and earned the DOL electrician certification; they are waiting on their test results from the National Electrical Code (NEC) exam.
"Massey Electric is an outstanding company who truly cares about investing in the education of their employees,” said Heather Brown, Workforce Development director. “Their Electrical Apprenticeship program focuses on both classroom and on the job learning. Cleveland State is proud to partner with Massey for the fourth year in a row."
