The Soddy Daisy Trojans got back on track last year when they won both the state duals and traditional state wrestling tournaments and they’re on track for a repeat performance after winning the Sectional 2 tournament at East Ridge Saturday and advancing a dozen wrestlers to next week’s traditional state tournament in Franklin.

Soddy Daisy was first with 224 points while runner-up Signal Mountain was next with 143.5. Alcoa was third with 102.5 while Samuel Everett School of Innovation was fourth with 96 and Upperman fifth with 70.5.

The Trojans advanced nine to the championship finals and finished with four champions.  Signal Mountain also had four winners and four others who advanced to next weekend.

“I thought we did pretty good as we did a little bit better than we originally thought we would,” said Ulric Winesburgh about his Soddy Daisy team.

“We advanced 12, including two who have been backups, so we’re happy with that.  We had another great week of practice and seem to be right where we need to be at this point as we just have to stay healthy and keep doing what we’ve been doing all season,” the soft-spoken coach added.

Signal Mountain coach Houston Clements was also pleased with the way his team performed as they had 11 entries and advanced eight.

“I thought we did great as we just had an awesome day,” Clements said by phone after it had ended.

“We know that Soddy Daisy has the team to beat, but we put ourselves in a pretty good position.  We can always count on our horses, but we just need for others to step up as their performances make the difference between winning and losing.  But we’ll go up there next weekend, do our very best and just see what happens,” he added.

Soddy Daisy’s four champions included Luke Myhan at 113, Ayden Jenkins at 120, Boogie Cosper at 157 and Jonathan Davis at 285.  Signal’s four winners included Luke Higdon at 106, Jackson Davis at 175 and the Uhorchuks – JoJo at 132 and Ethan at 138.

Other individual winners included Upperman’s Grady Phelps at 126, Whitwell’s Wyatt Davis at 144, Livingston Academy’s Kaden Weitzel at 165 and Alcoa’s Darius Sudderth at 190.  Samuel Everett had two winners in Lane Cope at 157 and Tyson Click at 215.
