The Mocs dropped its opening game Saturday 9-1 in a run rule finish before responding with double-digit runs in a 14-10 loss to host Stetson in the night cap.
Acelynn Sellers cranked out three home runs, becoming just the third UTC player to record three in a single game, and set a single-game total base record with three. She was 5-for-6 (.833) on the day with six RBI, a 2.333 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base percentage. Camryn Cernuto was 3-for-7 (.429) with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.
GAME 1 | Chattanooga 1, Binghamton 9
The Mocs fell 9-1 in five innings in the opening game Saturday afternoon.
Chattanooga went 5-for-21, drawing just one walk in the first loss of the season.
Chattanooga’s lone run came in the bottom of the third on a ground out by Olivia Lipari. Abi Pikas led off the inning with a single to first, reaching as both the first and second basemen went to field the hit, leaving the bag open. Zoe Wright grounded out to move Pikas over to second and she took third on a hit up the middle off the bat of Kailey Snell.
With bases loaded, Lipari sent her shot to third and was thrown out as she drove in Pikas to make it a 5-1 Binghamton advantage.
The Bearcats put up two runs in the second on a home run and three more in the third. The fourth added four more runs for Binghamton and the Mocs couldn’t add any more the rest of the way.
Alyssa Lavdis got the start and was relieved in the fourth by Peja Goold who picked up the season-opening shutout one day prior. Cernuto was 1-for-2 with a walk. Lipari was 1-for-3 on the day with one RBI. Snell was also 1-for-3 while Pikas got a hit in her only at bat and Acelynn Sellers picked up one hit.
GAME 2 | Chattanooga 10, Stetson 14
The Mocs got out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Hatters responded with four multi-run innings to claim a 14-10 victory over Chattanooga in the nightcap.
Acelynn Sellers went 4-for-4 on the day and became just the third Chattanooga player to record three home runs in the same game while setting a single-game total base record with 13. She had a solo shot in second and another in the fifth before belting a three-run homer in the sixth to pull the Mocs to within one run.
The Mocs went 14-for-33 with nine RBI and five extra base hits. Camryn Cernuto, Mia Leone and Zoe Wright each added two hits.
Sellers got the scoring started in the first with a single to drive in Cernuto. She then scored on a single off the bat of Presley Williamson to right field. In the second the Mocs added three runs to take a 5-0 lead.
Wright led off the second with a single and advanced to second on a hit up the middle by Kailey Snell. With both in scoring position, Wright scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0. Olivia Lipari doubled to right sending Snell home and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple in a close play at the bag.
Sellers added the Mocs fifth run of the game on a solo home run to left field.
Stetson answered with four runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 6-5 lead.
Sellers tied the game 6-6 in the fifth inning with a lead off solo shot over the fence in left. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Hatters plated five runs to get out front 11-6.
Not to be left out, the Mocs comeback fell short with three runs in the sixth to get to within a run at 11-10. Stetson closed the door with three more runs in the sixth and held off the Mocs in the top of the seventh for the win.
Riley Lamb made the start and was lifted in favor of Taylor Long after two. Mia Leone made her first collegiate start at catcher.
