Eddie Mae Jones Burney
Eddie Mae Jones Burney, 91, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, transitioned to her heavenly home peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2025, surrounded by her family.
She was born on Oct. 21, 1933, in Cartersville, Ga. She was the daughter of Lon and Mary Ann Berry-Jones. Mrs. Burney became a Christian and a member of the Church of Jesus at a young age. She was a giver and helped anyone, especially her loved ones who were hospitalized or sick. Big Mama, or “Tea” as she was affectionately called, was an awesome mother, daughter, niece, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
Mrs. Burney was preceded in death by her parents, Lon Jones and Mary Ann Berry; sisters, Lovie Mae Thomas and Polly Ann Sanders; brothers, Leon Jones, Charlie Jones, James H. Berry, and James E. Jones; and son, Arthur Lee Burney, Jr.
Mrs. Burney leaves a legacy of people who loved her, including her family. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Tommy Alexander Jones of Georgia, Johnetta Lane, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Pauletta Massengill, Louisville, Kentucky, Joseph Burney (Millie) of LaVergne, Tennessee, Mary Smith (Jimmie), Triangle, Virginia, Guwanda Wickley (Edward), Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bonita Burney, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Elaine Burney, Chattanooga, Tennessee; brother, Robert Jones (Rolanda), Detroit, Michigan and sister, Elizabeth Kelley, Decatur, Georgia.
Her legacy continues through her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved and cherished deeply. She leaves many nephews, nieces, and friends to cherish her memories.
Public viewing will begin at 9 a.m. until the hour of service, 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, in the Chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., Chattanooga, 423 622-9995.
Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.
