Continual Problems With The Soddy Daisy Postal Service

  • Tuesday, April 1, 2025

I have called and called my post office and it rings and rings but no one answers, therefore this is an open letter to the Soddy Daisy Post Office from a resident on Flat Top Mountain:

What is going on down there? It seems that as soon as you get a new mailman (or woman) trained they quit, and then you must repeat the entire training process all over again.

There must be some reason you can’t keep new employees. Would you please try to create a better working environment? Maybe you could play soothing music. Have someone bake cookies and bring them into work.

Also, “Bear one another’s burdens.”  In other words, help each other.

“Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, forgiving one another.”

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”  That’s Biblical.

Do we still have mail service on Flat Top Mountain? The only way I can get a mail delivery is to order a package from Amazon. The post office has started delivering packages again, but now they won’t pick up letters in the mailbox with the flag up…even when making a delivery. Astonishing.

Last week I had mail in my box to be picked up, my flag was up, but no one showed up to pick up my mail. This happened for three days in a row. Finally, I got in my car and delivered it.…..to the post office. Same thing yesterday. Flag was up; mail was in the box, but no one came. Happens frequently.

My house is not visible to any other house. Therefore, leaving mail in my mailbox overnight with the flag up is advertising to all passer-byers that something is inside the mailbox. I try not to advertise such things for obvious reasons. Therefore, I make two trips to my mailbox each day….one trip to take it out, and the other one to bring it in. That is truly counter-productive, and it is starting to make me a bit cranky.

When I first moved to this part of the county I was told by the neighbors that everyone who worked at the Soddy Daisy post office was related to each other. I don’t know why that was a problem then. When pondering the situation I realize how much improved service was back in those days. They delivered mail and picked it up. They never had packages stacked in the parking lot with tarps and tents over them to protect from the rain.

The family that ran the post office back in those days is probably happily enjoying their retirement. Obviously, the ideal would be that some of the descendants from the original family step forward and hire themselves out to the federal government for the benefit of their hometown. That would be an extremely patriotic thing to do under these circumstances.

If that is not possible I hereby plead with the employees at our post office to please recruit your aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, in-laws and outlaws to put in an application at the post office. According to YouTube, it is “woefully under-staffed”. That’s right! Just goggle it.

If this does not work for our wonderful little town the only other solution to the problem would be to call in Elon Musk and the DOGE team. This is a last resort, of course, for even though DOGE does a great job of streamlining government systems and saving money, it would create tremendous traffic problems for our lovely Soddy Daisy due to all the agitators and dissidents who follow Musk around. Those demonstrators use really bad language, too, and they would be such a corrupting influence on our children. Contacting Musk should truly be the last resort.

Soddy Daisy is just about perfect as a place to live, but we must admit there is some room for improvement at our post office.
