Mountain Outfitters Returns To Its Roots With New Chattanooga Location

  • Monday, April 28, 2025

Mountain Outfitters, Monteagle’s outdoor and lifestyle retailer, announces the opening of its second store, located in the Southern Saddlery building on Chattanooga’s Southside.

The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening on Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., accompanied by live music, food trucks and — as always — free parking.

Like the Monteagle store, Chattanooga’s Mountain Outfitters location will carry gear and apparel from the leading outdoor and athleisure brands, including Vuori, L.L.Bean, Patagonia, lululemon. Filson, Barbour, Free People Movement, R.L. Winston, Fishpond, Hoka, On Cloud, Birkenstock and more.

Chattanooga’s 20,000-square-foot store will also feature a large footwear department, a fly fishing and outdoor gear shop, and an entire floor dedicated to outlet finds from well-known labels.

“This Mountain Outfitters location will truly be a one-of-a-kind shopping experience,” said co-owner Haynes Burnett. “It’s where trail meets city, where fly rods sit next to dinner jackets, and where families can gear up for a weekend hike or a night downtown—all under one roof.”

The Burnetts believe their large, top-floor outlet space will be among the store’s biggest draws for local shoppers.

“We’ve been in retail long enough to know that price matters—so we’ve dedicated the majority of our upstairs to outlet deals you won’t find anywhere else in our area,” Mr. Burnett said. “They’re the same great brands, the same great quality, at prices that work for every budget.”

Owned and operated by Haynes and his wife, Anne Porcher Burnett, the Mountain Outfitters brand was established by Mr. Burnett’s late mother, Marjorie Burnett, in 1995. Marjorie, an entrepreneur, outdoor enthusiast, and local philanthropist, originally opened her store in Chattanooga before moving to the current Monteagle location, which will continue to operate.

“We’re calling this a grand opening, but really, it’s a homecoming,” said Mr. Burnett. “Our family’s first store was opened right here in Chattanooga decades ago. We’ve carried that legacy with us, and now we’re bringing it back—bigger, better, and with the same heart and energy. Chattanooga has an amazing history of outdoor preservation, philanthropy, and education, and we fully intend to honor that past and help shape its future.”

The Burnetts designed the new space to be more than a place to shop. They hope cozy sitting areas and coffee stations throughout the store will encourage people to relax and connect. Later this summer, they plan to announce a schedule of hands-on classes and events, such as fly-fishing and outdoors skill training, with the goal of fostering a sense of community and excitement for the outdoors.

“We’re redefining what an outdoor store can be,” Anne Porcher said. “It’s functional, it’s fashionable, and it’s fun—because we believe shopping should be an experience, not an errand. We’ve created something we’ve never seen before, and we can’t wait to share it.”
