Michael Lynn Welch Jr
With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael Lynn Welch Jr., age 37, who was taken from us far too soon on July 29, 2025.
Born in 1988, Michael was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle and friend. He was known for his kind heart, sharp wit and deep devotion to those he loved. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—playing football, golf, tuning in to Shark Week (though he swore he’d never set foot in the ocean) and spending time with his greatest pride and joy: his 14-year-old son, Cameron.
Michael and Cameron shared an unbreakable bond, strengthened by their love of sports and their loyalty to the Auburn Tigers. Fall Saturdays were sacred—spent side by side, on his mama’s back porch, cheering on their team with passion.
His mama’s back porch was also a place where daily conversations about politics were shared. The two loved discussing politics and their talks were filled with laughter, and something Michael and his mama looked forward to every day.
Michael was an outstanding athlete, especially on the football field. In his senior year at Ooltewah High School, he was honored as a Tennessee All-State Linebacker, a title that reflected not only his talent, but also his heart, grit and leadership. His passion for sports lives on through Cameron, with whom he shared countless memories playing and watching the games they both loved.
Spending time with Cameron was Michael’s greatest happiness. Whether they were out on the golf course, shooting hoops, tossing a football or simply enjoying each other’s company, their connection was full of love, laughter and unforgettable memories.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Michael Lynn Welch Sr.
He is survived by his son, Cameron; his loving mother, Jo Ellen Bowden Welch; his two sisters, Jennifer Waselewski (Bob) and Jamie Welch; his niece, Kaley; great-nieces Presley and Hayden; nephew Will; and loving aunts and cousins. Each of them will carry his memory forward.
His presence brought laughter wherever he went, and his absence leaves a deep ache in the hearts of all who loved him. Though his time here was far too short, the legacy of his spirit will live on forever.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel in Hixson, with visitation prior from 1-3 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friendship Primitive Baptist Church, 3630 Post Oak Road, Ringgold, Ga. 30736, in care of the Church Treasurer.
