Margaret Probasco Jones died on August 4, 2025, at age 90.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott L. Probasco, Sr., and Margaret Williams Probasco; her husband of 54 years, Robert C. Jones, III; brother, Scotty Probasco and sister, Alice Lupton.

“Peggy” was born in Chattanooga on August 21, 1934. She attended The Bright School, Girl’s Preparatory School, Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Mt. Vernon College in Washington, D.C.

She was involved in many community organizations as a member of the Junior League of Chattanooga and the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain. She served as a trustee of the Chattanooga Bible Institute (Richmont Graduate University), past president of Little Miss Mag Day Care, Girl’s Club (Girl’s Inc.), Volunteer’s Bureau, Chattanooga Art Association and a volunteer at Habitat serving on the Placement Committee. She was a member of the Lookout Mountain Club.

Peggy was an avid, competitive sportsman. She loved to fish, hunt, golf and play tennis until her knees said, “no more tennis.” She then turned to bridge which she loved from there on. As a young woman she won two City Women’s Teenage Golf Championships. She was as good at tennis as she was at golf, traveling and playing Team Tennis where she won most matches as well as the Senior City Doubles Championship.

Peggy was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church devoting much of her time to the missionary closet. She attended the Little Brown Church on Signal Mountain during the summer months where she was also a member. She was currently a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.

She was never happier than when she was surrounded by family.

Survivors include her three sons and a daughter, Robert C. Jones, IV, Thomas H. Jones, (Lolly), Walker L. Jones (Elizabeth), all of Lookout Mountain, and Margaret Smith (Scott) of San Rafael, Ca.

She was fondly known as Gran Peggy to her 11 grandchildren, Cannon Jones (Tesia), Marian King (Collier), Catherine Schwartz (Jimmy), Laura Barnett (Nick), Allison Hall (Andrew), Lizzie Brown (Emerson), Nevin Jones, Walker Jones, Bobby Jones, Mary Wilkin Smith and Evelyn Smith. She had 13 great-grandchildren of whom she was very proud.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to Waydean McCutchins and her wonderful team who cared for and loved Peggy for several years.

A private family burial will be held at 12 p.m. under the pavilion at Forest Hills Cemetery on Wednesday, Aug. 13. There will be a reception following at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club from 3-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girls, Inc. of Chattanooga, 4505 Brainerd Road #110, Chattanooga, Tn. 37411, Richmont Graduate University, 1825 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37404 or the charity of your choice.
