Trio Guilty On All Counts In Bank Robberies

A Federal jury on Thursday found three defendants guilty on all counts in a bank robbery scheme across Tennessee.

John Crisp and Thomas Nichols, both of Greenback, and Carlton Smith, of Dunlap, were convicted in the robberies of banks at Chattanooga, Knoxville and Clarksville, Tn., in 1995 and 1996.

The plan was to abduct female bank managers at their homes and then demand money while holding their families hostage.

The government said the men got away with $1.5 million in extorted funds.

The alleged mastermind of the plan, Douglas Daigle, committed suicide after his arrest.

His widow, Capri Daigle, was a key witness for the government. She said the trio on trial were involved in planning and carrying out all the heists.

She was given a reduced charge on money laundering for her role in the crimes.

The jury deliberated more than two hours on Wednesday and resumed talks at 9 a.m. Thursday before returning the verdicts at noon.

The defendants will be sentenced later.
