  • Thursday, September 19, 2002

Dr. James H. Amburgey has been named interim president at Hiwassee College, it was announced by the Reverend Doctor Albert Bowles, chairman of the board of trustees.

He said, "I am delighted and privileged to share with the Hiwassee community that Dr. Amburgey accepted the Executive Committee's invitation to serve as the Interim President."

The appointment will begin Oct. 1.

Dr. Amburgey has a long history with Hiwasee College, having served as the
academic dean from 1955-1980 and as the college president from
1980-1984.

This past summer, Dr. Amburgey volunteered countless hours
during the "Now is the Time" campaign helping Hiwassee raise over
$523,000, officials said.

"Dr. Amburgey will be joined by Dr. Beth R. Scruggs as the interim
academic dean," said Dr. Bowles. Dr. Scruggs has been a long-time faculty member and served Hiwassee since 1973.

During these 29 years, Dr. Scruggs has served the college as a department chair, member of the
College Planning Council, Institutional Effectiveness Committee,
Academic Council and other posts.

Dr. Scruggs has also served as the
interim academic dean in 1989 and served as the faculty representative
on the board of trustees.

"Hiwassee is progressively moving forward," said Dr. Bowles. This year,
Hiwassee had a 5% increase in enrollment. "We are confident that this progression will continue because of the generosity and partnership of our community and alumni.

"Hiwassee is very fortunate to have persons like Dr. Amburgey and Dr.
Scruggs who love and unselfishly give of their time and service to
fulfill the mission of this institution."
