Bryan Squanders 13-Point Lead At Union, Lady Lions Roll

  • Saturday, December 11, 2004

Union College battled back from a 13-point, second-half deficit to record a 68-64 win over visiting Bryan College in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday.

Down 55-42 with 11:19 remaining, the Bulldogs (6-6 overall, 4-3 AAC) embarked on an 18-4 run that was capped by a Chris Stunson (Richmond, Ky.) 3-pointer, putting Union up 60-59 with 4:32 left. Stunson, a freshman, hit one-of-two free throws to make it a two-point game, but Bryan's Vercell Wells tied the game at 61 with 2:05 to play.

The Bulldogs stretched the margin to 65-61 before Jonathan Little nailed a 3-pointer to pull Bryan within 65-64 with five seconds on the clock. Freshman Jerrod Gibbons (Monticello, Ky.) connected on two free throws, and Chris Mullins added one in the closing seconds as Union held on for the 68-64 victory.

"This was a very good win for us against a very good team," said Union coach Kelly Combs. "We didn't play our best game tonight, but we were able to battle back and get the win.

"I'm really proud of the way our freshmen played tonight. They showed a lot of poise and maturity."

In the first half, Union owned a 23-17 advantage with 8:40 remaining. However, Bryan (8-3 overall, 5-2 AAC) used a 15-8 surge to grab a 32-31 halftime edge.

Gibbons and Stunson each netted 15 points to pace Union, while Mullins chipped in 12.

For Bryan, Versell Wells' 27 points led the way with Little chipping in 11 and Nick Hansen 10.

In the womens' game, No. 16 Bryan College outplayed host Union in all phases of the game as the Lady Lions recorded the 75-59 Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball win.

Poor shooting plagued the Lady Bulldogs (9-3 overall, 4-3 AAC) again, connecting on just 35.6 percent (21 of 59 shots) while Bryan hit 41.5 percent (27 of 65) from the field. The Lady Lions owned the boards with a 53-32 rebounding edge with 17 offensive boards.

Early on the game was tight with the scored tied at 5 and at 10. However, Union's offense went cold as Bryan went on a 23-3 run to open up a 33-13 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs warmed back up before the half but still trailed 37-21 at the break.

Bryan led by as many as 27 points in the second, but Union cut the margin to 11 late in the game. Yet, the Lady Lions were never threatened as they posted the 75-59 victory.

Senior Ashley Bohanan (Lafayette, Tenn.) led Union with 23 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Makalla Yokley (Brownsville, Ky.) came off the bench to provide 12 points.

For Bryan (10-2 overall, 6-1 AAC), Sarah Bass' 19 points led the way with Abigail Snead adding 17 and Liz Bass netting 10. Brittany Swanson had 8 and Lacey Swanson 7. Kellie Thurman and Jessica Colvin scored 6 each. Amanda Davidson had 2.

Bryan Coach Matt Bollant said, "The first half was the best 20 minutes we have played all year. We played tonight like the team I had hoped we would be all year."

Bryan will play two games in the Bahamas during a missions trip. Their next conference game is not until Jan. 7.
