We recently enjoyed dinner at the new Fox Cay Restaurant located at Island Cove Marina on Highway 58. It would be great if this restaurant could do what others in this location have not – succeed! The owners want you to relax and enjoy a good meal – and the food is definitely worth the trip. The evening we were there, it was quite busy.

The menu follows a Bahamas theme using names such as “Bimini”, “Island” and “Paradise”. The interior of the restaurant looks very nice with lots of window area to view the water. There are also tables on the deck for outdoor dining.

The appetizers include Conch Fritters (with Bimini Sabe Sauce, $7.95), Island Steamed Clams (in Caribbean Wine Sauce, $9.95), and Crime Time Fried Pickles ($5.95). Wayne and I chose the Spinach Queso served with Island Chips and House-made Salsa Fresca ($6.95). The queso was delicious and served piping hot! We appreciate those restaurants that realize diners do not want their food served lukewarm. The only problem we had with this appetizer is that the chips are extra thin and kept breaking in the queso. There were small pieces of red pepper (possibly pimentos) in the queso, which added an additional twist to the taste.

Meats and Seafood (unless fried or steamed) are wood grilled and served with an Island Salad (with homemade dressings), and choice of Potato or Vegetable. Among the entree offerings are Filet Mignon ($29.95 and $19.95), Slow Roasted Prime New York Strip ($18.95 and $22.95), Baby Pork Tenderloin ($14.95) and Foy Cay Surf and Turf (6 oz. Petite Filet and 4 oz. Fresh Ahi Tuna ($24.95). If Seafood is your preference there is Wood Grilled Salmon ($16.95) and Grilled Tuna Steak ($14.95). There are also several Pasta dishes, sandwiches and burgers.

Wayne selected the South Bimini Fried Chicken ($10.95) served with a baked potato. The chicken was fresh, hot and delicious. The outside was very crisp, while the inside remained moist and tender. He said the only negative was that the chicken leg was very dry, as it had probably been dropped in to fry with the breast and stayed the same length of time, which allowed it to be overcooked. His potato was completely done (an accomplishment these days) and served with plenty of butter.

I went with the Fried Seafood Platter, consisting of Shrimp, Grouper, Oysters and Conch Fritters ($14.95). Everything was delicious, except for the Conch Fritters. I had never eaten Conch, but I’m usually up to try new things. For me, these were too chewy and rubbery, something I probably would not order again. The oysters were rather small, but had a delicious taste and I would order them again, as well as the Shrimp. For my potato, I selected Jimmy’s Twice Baked Potato, which I would definitely order again. It had been scooped out, mashed up, placed back in the skin and topped with cheese, bacon and chives. I found this to be a delicious treat.

We both enjoyed the tasty homemade salad dressings – Wayne had the Honey Mustard and I tried the Ranch.

We did not order dessert, but Fox Cay does offer six, including Junkanoo Beach Coconut Pie, Honeymoon Cay Bread Pudding and Overboard Chocolate Cake.

Fox Cay – Definitely a place we will want to visit again.

Hours for Fox Cay are Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. until 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. They are closed on Monday.
