  • Friday, May 25, 2007

Funeral services will be Monday in East Brainerd for Private First Class Travis Frederick Haslip, who was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, last Saturday.

The 20-year-old Ooltewah man was the first Hamilton County resident killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A native of Pontiac, Mich., PFC Haslip had been a resident of Ooltewah since 1990. He attended Ooltewah High School, Collegedale Academy and Chattanooga State. He attended Ooltewah Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He had been in the U.S. Army since December, 2005 and was awarded the Star Medal and a Purple Heart.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Arnold and Pastor Jose Nieves officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Congressman Zach Wamp will be among those attending.

A group from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., that pickets military funerals declared they will be at the Haslip services. The group announced earlier it was coming to several military funerals in the Chattanooga area, but has not shown up at any of them.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oaks School, In Memory of Travis Haslip Computer Lab, 9209 Amos Road, Ooltewah, TN 37363.

The body is slated to arrive at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport on Saturday.
