Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special guided driving tour of the Battle of Ringgold Gap on Saturday at 10 a.m. The tour is open to the public.
Park Ranger Lee White will conduct
a 90-minute driving tour on the Battle of Ringgold Gap. The tour begins at the Ingles Supermarket, located at 5044 Alabama Highway in Ringgold.
On the morning of Nov. 27, 1863, Union forces under General Joseph
Hooker clashed with the rear guard of the Confederate army led by General
Patrick Cleburne at Ringgold Gap in a small but vicious engagement. The
battle would result in a defeat for the Union forces after a string of
victories around Chattanooga that prompted one Union officer to remark that the battle was a “Senseless Exposure of Brave Men.”
