Tres Leches Taste-off Celebrates Latin American Favorite

  • Wednesday, June 30, 2010

The Creative Discovery Museum is celebrating the sweet, delicious taste of a Latin American favorite, Tres Leches Cake on July 10 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Museum guests will participate in an afternoon of tasting as several local Hispanic restaurants and bakeries provide free samples of their own Tres Leches recipes. Kids and adults will have a chance to taste this light, moist cake and crown the day’s Tres Leches Cake favorite.

Tres Leches is a cake soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated, condensed and heavy cream.

While there are varied recipes that add flavorful nuances, each is based on the tradition of saturating cake in the three milks. Machu Picchu Restaurant and La Esperanza Bakery are two local establishments ready to share this flavorful dessert with Museum guests.

“Tres Leches Cake is a delicious cake and one that kids and adults will love tasting,” said Liza Blair, museum arts manager. “This is one of the many museum arts-related events promoting the unique and diverse ethnic foods found right here in our city.”

Speculation of the origins of the cake is as diverse as the recipes; however, popular belief is that the recipe was fashioned in Europe, coinciding with the tradition of the British rum cake and Italian tiramisu, and became popular in Latin America during World War II through a company’s promotion for canned milk. With recipe adaptations and trends in ethnic populations, this rich dessert has finally migrated to menus across America.
