Legitimate Concerns About GOP Congressional Candidates

  • Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Roy Exum’s point about the need to address serious issues in the upcoming election year is extremely well taken, as is his call to reduce the name-calling and “bickering and squabbling” that dominate the political process today.

On behalf of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, I would like to express our apologies to those who were offended by comments made recently in our executive committee meeting, which was open to the public and the press. Civility in public discourse, though admittedly difficult to find in the rough-and-tumble world of American politics, is absolutely something to strive for.

However, I do not want this issue to obscure our legitimate concerns about the two declared Republican candidates for the 3rd Congressional District, as well as the possible contender who has emerged in recent reports.

Our stance is that the current incumbent, Rep.

Chuck Fleischmann, while worthy of being congratulated for his attendance and voting record, has done nothing to help the unemployed of his district, his state or the nation, nor has he aided those facing foreclosure. In fact, his record of voting against anything proposed by the Obama administration simply because it was proposed by the administration has hindered recovery efforts.

Weston Wamp may well make an effective candidate someday. But we believe that other than his name, at this time, he has little to offer voters who want a proven track record and a mature understanding of the grave issues facing our district and country.

As of now, Scottie Mayfield has not formally declared his candidacy. “Mayfield”, like “Wamp”, certainly commands name recognition in the region. Should he decide to enter the race, we would like to hear what else he brings to the table in terms of solutions and ideas for our country’s future.

The Democratic candidates, Bill Taylor and Dr. Mary Headrick, will continue to go on record with their views on healthcare, jobs creation, tax reform, education and all the other major concerns of residents of the 3rd District. Let’s move forward in a spirit of offering all voters a chance to hear the views that really matter to them and their families. Perhaps we can become a model for the 2012 election season.
