Signal Mountain Middle High School has the first winter guard, the sport of indoor color guard, in the area.  Modern winter guard uses a combination of flags, mock rifles, sabers and other equipment along with the integration of dance and other interpretive movement.

The season is nearing completion at Signal Mountain Middle High School, and the participants will share their routine with the community at their final performance at SMMHS later this month.

Team members from SMMHS are comprised of 7th grader Rachel Kennedy, 8th grader Makaylee Jones, and high school sophomores Lydia Dubois, Savannah Ducker and Nicole Donnel.  A home school high school senior, Mikayla Kosicek, anchored the team.  Trained and coached by Mary Elise Barrett, a seasoned winter guard performer herself, the team performed for their parents and peers.

Ms. Barrett is looking forward to next year’s winter guard season.  She welcomes teen girls and guys from the area, including home schoolers, to participate.

Winter guard season runs from late November to the end of March.  For further information, contact Ms. Barrett at maryelise4@gmail.com.
