Children writing and illustrating during Kid Book Kamp
Kid Book Kamp is a new program at various Chattanooga area locations where children ages six to 12 write, illustrate and publish their own book during a one week summer camp session. The camps are scheduled at Cumberland Presbyterian Church on North Moore Road and LearningRx Chattanooga at 2040 Hamilton Place Blvd. Kid Book Kamp was founded by Chicago-based author and educator, Laurel Donnellan and is being launched in several cities around the country including Chattanooga.
“The goal of Kid Book Kamp is to provide a fun and creative environment for children to use their imagination. During the one week camp, the kids are allowed to break away from the distractions of electronics and use basic materials to take from concept to reality an idea that is entirely their own. The program helps them become authors while developing their self-esteem and key business skills,” said Chinyere Ubamadu, affiliate coach and director, Kid Book Kamp.
Each camp runs for a week with half-day sessions, during which kids enjoy healthy snacks and learn about each step of the writing and publishing process. The program is facilitated by a certified affiliate coach of Bright Livelihoods who utilizes an inventive curriculum, a variety of creative materials and inspiration to engage children in the process of writing, illustrating and professionally publishing a book. Parents are invited to hear their children’s stories during the last day of camp. Professionally published books are mailed to each participant’s home within two weeks of the end of the session. Parents also have the option to purchase additional books or book businesses for their children and Kid Book Kamp helps kids market their books online. Kid Book Kamp (which has been featured on NPR) is currently accepting registrations for its camps.
