Major Clifford Peavy, 65, was born January 4, 1949 to Warb, Sr. and Evia Peavy in Tuskegee, Alabama.  He died on December 26, 2014.

Major grew up in Chattanooga, and graduated from Howard High School in the Class of ’66.   After attending the Chattanooga City College, he enlisted in the United States Army and completed two tours of Vietnam.

As an educator, his professional body of work included services as an English teacher and assistant principal.   He served as an assistant principal of Lumberton Junior High School and also at Purnell Sweat High School (until his retirement in 2006).  An exemplar of excellence in education, Major completed both his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Fayetteville State University (FSU).  He dedicated his life to education and was committed to mentoring children to assist them with achieving both their academic and future career goals.

Major was a profound humanitarian with a servant spirit.  He was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  Additionally, he was a member of the Fayetteville State University Alumni Association, FSU Athletic Club, Veterans’ Foreign Wars (Post 6018), and American Legion (Post 202).  He also served as a lifetime member of the Military Retirement Association. 

Major’s talent as an actor, singer and great orator began in high school where he was widely known for his lead roles in numerous plays and musicals.  As an active member of Sandy Grove Baptist Church, his powerful rendition of “I Have A Dream” by Martin Luther King, Jr. became well known within the church and throughout the communities.

Major was known for his generous spirit, specifically giving to people in need.  As an entertainer, he loved the spotlight and making people laugh.  He loved the comradery of his Fraternity, Barber Shop and VFW.  He was truly devoted to his family.  Major was always the one who kept his family members laughing until the tears flowed at family gatherings.  

As a faithful servant to the Lord, Major Clifford Peavy leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 14 years, Tomasa Morales Peavy.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Warb, Sr. and Evia Peavy; brothers Warb “Butch” Peavy, Jr. and Wilburn L. Peavy.  Others who will cherish his memory, two children, Nicole Beverly (Lumberton, North Carolina) and Michelle Davis (Raleigh, North Carolina); two grandchildren, Demi Dowdell and Zoe Beverly; sisters, Pernella P. Lee(Chicago, IL), Cula Cleta Goodwin (Chattanooga, TN) and Marvis P. McKeldin (Chattanooga, TN); aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Sandy Grove Baptist Church, 1601 Matin Luther King, Jr., Drive, Lumberton, N.C. 28358. 

 

The family hour will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 4–8 p.m. at Colvin Funeral Home, 1904 E. Elizabethtown Road, Lumberton, NC 28358.
