  • Tuesday, April 8, 2014

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team wraps up the 2014 regular season on Wednesday, hosting Samford at the UTC Tennis Courts.  First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.D.T.).

The Mocs are 6-12 overall and 1-7 in Southern Conference action.  UTC has been in each of the last two matches, dropping 4-3 decisions to both Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

Junior Pavels Grigorjevs has won three in a row at No. 1, where he is 5-4 this spring.  Sophomore Luke Saunders is also on a three-match winning streak and is 8-5 at No. 3.  He sports a 4-2 record in SoCon singles action and leads the team with 14 singles wins overall.

This will be the final home match at the UTC Tennis Courts for Chattanooga senior Jorge Varon.  A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Varon transferred to UTC from East Tennessee State prior to the start of the season and has played in the top of the lineup all year.  He is 10-19 overall in singles action, including a 4-3 mark at No. 2.  He also has five wins at No. 1 doubles with sophomore teammate John Peacey.

Samford is 7-9 overall and 4-3 in league matches.  The Bulldogs have won two-straight, including a 6-1 victory against Georgia Southern on Saturday.  Elliott Barnwell leads the team with an 11-5 mark at No. 1 singles.  He is also 6-1 in SoCon matches.  He and Trey Carter have both won five in a row.  Carter is 7-8 overall at No. 5.

A link for live scoring for the match is available on the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.

The women’s  team hosts Lee University Thursday in a rescheduled match from earlier in the season.  This is the last home match for the Mocs who close out the regular season at Samford on Saturday.

This contest against Lee is the fifth in the series.  It was previously scheduled for February 26 but was changed due to inclement weather.  UTC is 4-0 all-time against the Flames, and has never dropped a point in the series.

The Mocs are currently undefeated at home with a record of 9-0.  UTC is going for its first perfect record at home since an 8-0 mark in 1999.

Chattanooga is 16-3 overall and tied with Samford for second in the Southern Conference race at 7-1. Furman is currently first with a 7-0 league mark.

Juniors Kaylene Chadwell and Claire Mulyadi currently lead the team with 15-3 record in singles action this spring.  Chadwell holds down the No. 2 position while Mulyadi is No. 5.

Senior Alexa Flynn and sophomore Kayla Jones are both on three-match winning streaks.  Jones is 13-6 at No. 1 while Flynn is 13-4 at No. 3.  Flynn and Chadwell leads the doubles efforts with a 10-2 record at No. 1.

Teams are all battling for the SoCon regular season trophy as well as positioning at the SoCon Tournament in less than two weeks.  UTC is the host for the event on April 16-19 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
