Mary Jo Costello Smith died peacefully in her home on Sunday, November 6, 2016 after an extended illness.

Proverbs 41:26-27 reads, "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Jo was a great mother, and for much of her life, she was a single working mom, raising four children and one grandchild.

She was born in Chattanooga but was primarily raised in Jacksonville Beach, Fl. She graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School at Jacksonville Beach.

She moved back to Chattanooga with her mother after graduation and started a family with Charles J. "Chuck" Costello.

"Jo" worked at Cutter Labs for 30 years and retired from Mountain Management after seven years of service.

She is survived by a brother, Jimmy (Altha) Harris; children Mike (Mitsy) Costello, Angela (Colin) Woolfall and Mark Costello; and by grandchildren Regan (Allison) Costello, Lauren (Casey) Hester, Jason (Crystal) Woolfall, Jacob Costello and Keelie (Jason) Holder. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

Jo was predeceased by her mother and father, Tom Harris and Aliene Wampler; by a brother, Ray Harris; by a daughter, Stephanie Moore; a grandson, Will Costello; and by Frank Smith, to whom she was married late in life.

The family is grateful for the devoted care and love given to her especially by her daughter Angela Woolfall, who sacrificed so much to be by her side for the past three years. Also significant in her care was Keelie Holder and her children, Dakota, Sissy, Maggie Jo and Colton, who cheered her up and kept her going during many long and difficult days. Additionally, Connie Lavoie and Avalon Hospice provided excellent care in addition to the love and care provided by the family.

A memorial service will be held at the Rivermont Presbyterian Church on Friday, Nov. 11, officiated by Reverend Clay Thomas. Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. at the church and the memorial service will be held at 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Cremation Center of Chattanooga; 1345 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421, 423 362-5999.
