Paul Phillips

Paul Grey Phillips, husband, father, son and life-long resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died peacefully in his sleep on March 19, 2016, at the age of 87.

Paul was born in Dibrell, TN, the youngest son of the late Bob T. Phillips, a line foreman with Standard-Coosa Thatcher, and Ressye Locke Phillips, a homemaker. He was predeceased by his brother, Jack Phillips, also of Chattanooga.

He was married to Cordia B. Phillips for 68 years. Together they established a home and raised three daughters, Paula Smith of Seattle, WA, Sandra Phillips and Karen Chin, both of Atlanta, GA.  He was an incredible father who transported the girls to the library, cooking pancakes and donuts on Saturdays, giving financial advice and teaching numerous life skills that have proved to be indispensable. He taught them the meaning of honesty and integrity and having a generous heart. He graduated from Central High School in 1946.

Paul worked as a draftsman and chief engineer for Weigel Engineering for over 40 years. He was a gentle and compassionate provider and was well respected by everyone he met. He was your typical engineer, private and quiet, but was also engaging and playful; always adding a story or joke to the conversation. He passed down his deep love of God, family, travel and photography to all of his daughters. A life-long member of the Church of Christ, his spiritual roots were deep and strong where he led by serving others. He and his wife went on numerous mission trips, including to St. Thomas and Russia. In his later years, he attended East Ridge Church of Christ.

Mr. Phillips is also survived by three grandchildren (Megan Hawley, Iris Littrell, Sam Littrell), one great-grandchild (Porter Hawley), and son-in-law, Sean Chin. We will enjoy reviewing his slides and videos as we mourn and remember him every day.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 21, at 2 p.m. in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Ministers Charles Cochran and Doug McVey officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Russian Missions or The Benevolent Room in care of East Ridge Church of Christ 951 McBrien Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37412.
