James "Jim" Albert Johnston, 82, proudly calling his home Soddy Daisy, as he was one of the incorporators of the two cities in 1969, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Jim spent many years serving his First Baptist Church of Soddy Daisy family in various capacities such as deacon, training union director and building committee duties. In his later years, Jim was openly welcomed to Stuart Heights Baptist Church – Soddy Daisy Campus where he enjoyed fellowship and Wednesday night suppers. After retirement, “Jimmy” really enjoyed those monthly lunches with his fellow graduates and friends of the Soddy Daisy Class of 1952.

He received his engineering degree from Tennessee Tech. His professional career involved DuPont, Georgia Steel, Freeport Indonesia and TDOT for 30 years. He also served with the U.S. Army National Guard for many years. He was a lifelong fan of the Tennessee Vols and the Atlanta Braves.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Nina Johnston; brother, Burton Johnston; brother-in-law, Jim Mullenix and loving wife of 52 years, Joyce Fry Johnston. 

He is survived by children, Cindy Couey, Terri (Danny) Robinson and Mike (Dee) Johnston; sisters-in-law, Betty Rigsby Johnston and Gayle Fry Mullenix; grandchildren, Ashley, Heather and Rachel Couey, Michael Johnston, Brittaney Pierce, Lauren Hannah; great grandchildren, Destiny Couey, Harmony Crawley, Alexis Couey and Brycen “Albert” Shropshire, Kaylee, Conner, Ava, Brody, Harley and Sammy and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Sunday, May 28, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Gary Jared officiating. Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is on Saturday, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
