John Vandagriff
John H. Vandagriff, 88, passed away at his home on Saturday, January 5, 2019.
He was the son of George Calvin Vandagriff and Alta Mai Davis Vandagriff. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Jean Vandagriff Fuston, and infant daughter, Debra Sue Vandagriff.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Barbara Sue (McAfee) Vandagriff, sons, John M. (Sharon) Vandagriff and William Dale (Lynda) Vandagriff. He is also survived by grandsons, Brian Jeffrey (Holly) Vandagriff, and Brandon (Jessica) Vandagriff; granddaughters, Lauren Ashleigh Dieckhaus (Jeff) and Katherine Leigh Sanders; six great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters, and one nephew.
He was born in DeKalb County, Tn., before moving to Chattanooga as a teenager. He graduated from Chattanooga Central High School in 1949. He retired from Combustion Engineering in 1991 after serving there as a nuclear estimator for several years. After his retirement, he continued to work as an independent contractor on numerous construction and remodeling projects. He enjoyed flying and refurbishing old airplanes and automobiles. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He devoted the last few years of his life to caring for his loving bride. He was an active member of Westside Baptist Church until his health prevented him from attending any longer.
The family will receive friends at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 12–2 p.m. with a graveside service immediately following in Greenwood Cemetery. Pastor Garry Moore of Westside Baptist Church will officiate the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
