Clarity Needed On The City Property Tax Increase

  • Wednesday, August 13, 2025

The Unity Group of Chattanooga expresses serious concern regarding the lack of clarity and transparency in the process surrounding the proposed property tax increase currently under consideration by city officials.

Over the past several days, we have fielded numerous inquiries from concerned community members who are confused about the timeline, purpose, and structure of upcoming meetings related to this proposal. According to various reports, an ad hoc committee met Tuesday to explore a potential alternative budget.

Additional reports suggest that a supplemental budget may be debated on Aug. 19, with a possible further meeting on Aug. 26. At this time, no official, centralized schedule has been published that clearly outlines the path forward, leaving residents uncertain about how and when they can participate in the process.

We also wish to highlight the need for clearer communication regarding the disabled property tax relief programs available to senior citizens. Currently, there are three separate programs that, may provide relief through property tax freezes or forgiveness. However, these programs require annual reapplication, and many seniors persons or veterans are unaware of their eligibility or the renewal process.

The Unity Group urges city officials to:

  1. Immediately publish an official schedule of all public meetings, hearings, and votes related to the property tax increase and budget alternatives.

  2. Provide plain-language explanations of the property tax relief programs for seniors, including eligibility, application deadlines, and renewal procedures.

  3. Ensure broad and inclusive public outreach so that all Chattanooga residents, particularly vulnerable populations, can stay informed and have their voices heard.

Transparent governance and meaningful civic participation are essential to maintaining public trust, especially when decisions impact essential services and residents' financial well-being.

We are committed to working with the community and city leadership to promote a fair, informed, and equitable process.

Yours In Abundance,

Eric Atkins
