Signal Corps Performs For Community Before Taking Show To State On Saturday

  • Tuesday, October 29, 2019

The community is invited to come Friday night to see a free performance of Signal Mountain’s "Signal Corps" High School Marching Band. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. in the football stadium. (Eagles play at Sweetwater in their last regular-season game.)

Signal Corps looks forward to presenting its show “Everest” to the public, especially those unable to attend a home football game when the show was performed locally, officials said.

The community performance will serve as a final dress rehearsal before the band’s last competition on Saturday at the Tennessee Division II State Marching Band Championship in Smyrna.

"Signal Corps takes the public on a musical journey to the top of Mount Everest," officials said. "Robust brass melodies, sweeping woodwind lines and repeated musical rhythms depict the risks and dangers involved with climbing the slope and the victory of finally reaching the summit."

Band Director Drew Buckner hopes people see “the ominous and forbidden nature of Mount Everest and the exciting journey of the ascent.”

Complex music plus the visual effects of tents, colorful Tibetan prayer flags and gliding bodies make “Everest” one of the most challenging and impressive shows the band has produced, according to Mr. Buckner.

It’s paid off, as Signal Corps has racked up several awards on its march to State.

Last weekend the band competed at the Band of Americas Regional Competition in Powder Springs, Ga., where Signal Mountain was honored with being named the Class A BOA Regional Champions, taking all captions in their division -- Class Champions and First Place in Music, Visual, and General Effect.

“They had their best run of the season so far at BOA," Mr. Buckner said. “Hard work is making this show one for the ages.”

The week prior, Signal Corps placed second overall in the inaugural Trojan Invitational at Soddy-Daisy High School. In addition, the band also earned first place in its division for Percussion, Color Guard and Band.

The band’s first competition was at the Bradley Classic Marching Band Competition in Cleveland. Their visual effects weren’t complete then, but the band still received Second Place Overall Band, First Place Music, and First Place Percussion in their division.

"Their fans wish Signal Corps all the best as they 'Conquer Everest' at State this weekend," officials said.
