Chattanooga Fire Department crews on Saturday extinguished a fire at a vacant building on Bonny Oaks Drive.

Units were called to the structure in the 6000 block around 4:45 p.m. The building used to be Walt’s Restaurant and then AJ’s.

CFD arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the front side of the building.

Firefighters made an aggressive offensive attack from three sides. But heavy winds were causing smoke to blow back across Bonny Oaks so everyone pulled back and went to a defensive attack.

They made a good stop on the structure to keep the whole building from burning.

An adjacent building was untouched.

One firefighter suffered a heat-related injury on the scene and was transported to the hospital.

The vacant structure suffered extensive damage in the fire, which is under investigation.

Twelve companies responded to the scene. Extra companies were brought to add to manpower due to the heat so crews could swap out.

Mutual aid was helping provide fire coverage in the city.

Bonny Oaks Drive was initially shut down for emergency crews.

Hot spots were being monitored.
