Why I Support Tyler Howell For Red Bank Commissioner

  • Friday, October 30, 2020

Hello Red Bank Citizens, former Mayor John Roberts here. I am supporting Tyler Howell on Nov. 3, let me tell you why. One, he has proven himself capable, responsible, and has demonstrated that he has Red Bank citizens' best interests at heart in his leadership. With the tragic loss of Commissioner Terry Pope, Tyler stepped up and filled Terry’s seat while upholding the ideals that Terry Pope held dear. That was because he was capable.

Secondly, Tyler Howell has the leadership skills that the position requires. In speaking with an opponent, it was said to me, “these are all ballot issues”. The problem with taking every issue to a ballot is that it requires citizens to keep going to the poles to vote on each decision. This is a costly and cumbersome task for citizens. When we vote, we vote for a leader to make the decisions for us, we vote for the person who holds our beliefs and principles dear. This is why citizens elect representatives- to represent them, to lead them. It is especially important for citizens' thoughts and opinions to be heard, but you can do it without requiring the citizens to do your job for you.  This is leadership.

Thirdly, Tyler has proven that he understands the principles of economy. He understands that all things cost money and by proposing/voting for certain amenities, the cost of that decision is passed onto the property owners of Red Bank. Providing universal preschools will cost money. Providing bussing through Dayton Boulevard will cost in upwards of $200,000 a year. Tyler knows how to search and obtain other funding sources to help reduce the financial burden to property owners while still providing amenities that the constituents would like to have. In the same conversation with the certain candidate, there was no such mention of obtaining funding outside the wallets of Red Bank citizens. Tyler’s vote for the extension of White Oak Park to Stringer’s Ridge, his vote for paving, for bridge repairs, and for further commercial development and against the plasma center shows he has heard constituents' wishes and has followed through without raising taxes. This is responsibility.

By now, most people have made their minds up as to whom they will vote for. My hopes are if you are one of them, you will read this article, and consider what it is that you would like in a representative. Please know that no position in the Red Bank commission is a means to grant wishes without reservation, it is a position that requires thought, an understanding of the workings of governmental systems, and regard for all of its people. I have served in this city for eight years, trust me, no one candidate can make every single person happy. But only one of the persons running for this position can help you to live in Red Bank without paying Chattanooga’s tax rates.

Please join me in electing the most qualified person for the job – vote for Tyler Howell.
