Former Miss Chattanooga Was 1st Weather Woman At WTVC Channel 9

Marcia Cate Overstreet of Signal Mountain entered the glorious Gates of Heaven to join our Lord on June 9, 2020.  She would have been 86 on August 19, having been born in 1934 in Miami Beach, Florida to John and Effie Stolpmann.  Marcia passed away peacefully at home from natural causes surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. 

Marcia is survived by her husband of 40 years this coming August, BJ Overstreet, daughter, Catherine Cate White, and sons, Forrest Cate, III, and John (Stephanie) Cate; eight grandchildren, Forrest (Jenna) Cate, IV, Matthew Cate, Preston Cate, Michael Cate, Kassey O’Kelley, Anna Cate, Lillie Cate, and Shiloh Robertson; one great-grandchild, Lucy Blake Cate; sister, Jo Fleming, brother, Jim Stolpmann, nephew, Michael Cross, niece, Susan Smith, nephew, Chris Kropp, niece, Terri Fleming Zwicker, niece, Catherine Fleming, and nephew, Steve Fleming; two of her dearest friends, Lynn Jones and John Rymer.  

Marcia was predeceased by her first husband, Forrest Cate, Jr., brother, John M. Stolpmann, Jr., sister, Virginia S. Cross, and sister, Pauline Kropp. 

Marcia graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1952 as well as the University of Chattanooga with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art in 1956.  She met her future husband, Forrest Cate, Jr., while attending UC. 

Marcia was a former Miss Chattanooga of 1957, and the first weather woman in Chattanooga on WTVC Channel 9, in 1958. 

Marcia married Forrest Cate, Jr. in 1959.  Mr. Cate passed away in 1979 at the age of 45 after 20 years of marriage.  After his death, Marcia became an inspirational speaker to Christian women’s Bible groups.  She also was supportive of the efforts of Teen Challenge. 

Marcia loved to paint beautiful things and was an accomplished artist.  Her last work culminated into the publication of “A Day at Gramma’s,” which she beautifully illustrated.  She also loved to dance.  In her youth, Marcia could do tap and ballet.  In her later years, she enjoyed ballroom dancing.

Marcia loved to garden.  Her yard was always full of beautiful flowers. 

Marcia loved her family and particularly enjoyed cooking delicious meals for everyone at family gatherings, until she no longer could. 

Marcia had a strong faith and a deep love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 

Marcia’s family is having a private service at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Scenic City Stroke Support Group, 2413 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37404 in Marcia’s honor.
