World War II Veteran Held Long Career With City Of East Ridge

Charles Oliver Moses, Jr.
Charles Oliver Moses, Jr., 94, of East Ridge, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021. He was born October 25, 1926, in Ft. Payne, Alabama, son of the late Charles O. Moses, Sr. and Oma Dean Moses. Charles was a member and deacon at East Ridge Baptist Church for many years and was currently attending Brainerd Baptist Church where he was a member of the Friendship Class.
 
Mr. Moses served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Coxswain aboard the USS Xenia (AKA-51) and was honorably discharged in 1946. After the war, he was employed with the city of East Ridge as a heavy equipment operator for the Streets Department. He retired after 35 years.
Charles was an avid baseball fan and found much enjoyment in attending Atlanta Braves games with his grandsons. He also loved carpentry work, building furniture, and framing houses with Habitat for Humanity. He was much loved as a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather.
 
Besides his parents, Mr. Moses was preceded in death by his wife, Edna G. Moses, siblings, Emma Moses Stewart, Tommy Moses, Lynn Moses and Jerry Moses.
 
He is survived by his daughter, Carol Setliffe (James, Sr.); grandsons Jimmy Setliffe, Jr. (Tammy), and Matthew Setliffe (Naomi) of Chattanooga, TN; great-grandchildren Desi Johnson (Billy), and River Pruett (Drew) of Chickamauga, GA; Samuel Setliffe (Jessica) of Cleveland, TN; Ava and Jane Setliffe of Glasgow, Scotland; Maia Brisbane, Islay and Ruaridh James Setliffe of Chattanooga, TN; and great-great-grandchildren Stetson, Billy Joe, and Elizabeth Johnson of Chickamauga, GA.; siblings Martha Bailey, Ray Moses, David Moses, Linda Payne, Terri Moses, Cheryl King, and Wayne Moses.
 
The family would like to thank the staff of Rosewood at Fort Oglethorpe Assisted Living Residence for the loving care of Charles for many months.
 
Visitation will be at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel on Monday, Jan. 25, from 4-7 p.m. Graveside services will be on Jan. 26, at 12:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Charles’ grandson, Reverend Matthew Setliffe officiating.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his name.
 
Due to the COVID-19, we request that masks be worn at all times while at the funeral home and cemetery, and all Hamilton County and the CDC’s mandates be adhered to.
