Walnut Street Bridge To Serve As Key Feature Of IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga Race

  • Friday, May 16, 2025

Downtown Chattanooga is gearing up to host the IRONMAN 70.3 race this weekend, and the historic Walnut Street Bridge will play a central role. While the bridge is currently undergoing a scheduled renovation, access will be exclusively granted only to race participants, IRONMAN staff, race volunteers, and the Chattanooga Police Department to ensure the seamless and safe execution of the event.

This weekend's IRONMAN 70.3, along with other planned events, received official sanctioning prior to the commencement of the bridge's necessary maintenance. Recognizing the significance of the bridge to the race course, the city of Chattanooga’s Engineering and Risk Management departments have collaborated closely with the bridge contractor and IRONMAN race organizers. These proactive meetings have resulted in a comprehensive agreement on stringent safety protocols, said officials.

During the race, Chattanooga Police will be stationed at both entrances of the Walnut Street Bridge to manage access. Clear and visible markings will highlight the designated race path across the bridge, ensuring the safety of athletes and the protection of the ongoing bridge work.

"The Walnut Street Bridge is an iconic structure in our city, and we are pleased that it can still be a part of the IRONMAN 70.3 experience" said city engineer Bill Payne. "The safety of athletes, volunteers and the integrity of the bridge are our top priorities. We appreciate the cooperation of the bridge contractor and the diligent planning of our city departments and IRONMAN organizers to make this happen."

Residents and spectators are encouraged to cheer on the athletes from various vantage points along the racecourse, keeping in mind that access to the Walnut Street Bridge will be limited to authorized personnel only during the event.
