Chattanooga Red Wolves Drop Home Match To Toronta FC II

  • Saturday, October 16, 2021

With huge playoff implications on the line, the Red Wolves welcomed Toronto FC II to CHI Memorial Stadium. Despite a dominant first half from Chattanooga, Toronto managed to capitalize on their only shot of the first half after a free kick was met by Toronto’s Paul Rothrock in the 8th minute to make it 1-0. The Red Wolves would open after the goal and control the match, creating the vast majority of chances outshooting Toronto eight to one in the first 45. The 37th minute saw the Red Wolves best chance of the half as a ball rolled beggingly past the Toronto FC II goal before Jonathan Ricketts put the ball just off the frame. Despite a barrage of dangerous buildups, Chattanooga was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The hunt for an equalizer would be interrupted by the halftime whistle.

The second half started with a second goal from Toronto on their second shot of the game leaving the Red Wolves a mountain to climb in the final 45 minutes. The following portion of the half saw Toronto Goalkeeper Andreas Vaikla take a shelling from the Red Wolves offense, which ended the match with 17 shots on the night. After several substitutions from manager Jimmy Obleda in an attempt to tie the game, the Red Wolves created a great chance in the 60th minute. Rey Ortiz whipped in a brilliant free kick which was met by Rafa Mentzingen, but his header was saved by the TFC II keeper. The Red Wolves would pull a goal back in the 77th minute courtesy of a clinical set piece service from Rey Ortiz who found Juan Galindrez, marking his 10th goal of the season. The Red Wolves continued to barrage the TFCII Keeper but the late rally would come up just short as the Red Wolves would drop a frustratingly close loss to TFC II despite outshooting Toronto 17 to 3 on the night.

The Red Wolves are now set up for a high stakes, marquee USL League One Match on the road against the defending champions Greenville Triumph next Saturday the 23rd. It will be a match in which either side can take control of the second seed in USL League One heading into the playoffs and potentially determine the first date of a Red Wolves postseason match at CHI Memorial Stadium.
