Dr. Kenneth "Ken" Stanford Nickerson, 91, passed away on October 21, 2021, at the Life Care Center of Red Bank in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1930, in Dartmouth, Halifax County, Nova Scotia to the late Stanford M. Nickerson and Ethel Heathfield Nickerson. He is preceded in death by his brother, Don Nickerson and sister, Jean Nickerson Crook of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Dr. Nickerson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Kings College in Halifax, N.S. He then earned a Masters Degree in Psychology from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 1964 he became a citizen of the United States and attended Duke University where he earned his doctorate in Philosophy.
He was an avid reader, and loved a variety of music, especially classical. He was a generous man, donating to various charities and organizations. During his career Dr. Nickerson provided psychiatric services through his private practice. He also taught Philosophy at Asheville-Biltmore College in Asheville, N.C.; Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fl.; University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fl.; and Clayton Junior College in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Nickerson was also employed by the State of Tennessee Department of Corrections.
He is survived by his sons, Bruce (Lisa) Nickerson and Scott (Angela) and grandson, Aleksandr Nickerson, mother of his children, Debbie Higgins Hamlin, nephew, Jimmy Crook, nieces, Elizabeth Crook and Margaret Crook, and great niece, Olivia Crook.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
