Chattanooga center Abbey Cornelius was named the Southern Conference women's basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cornelius averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds on the week with four assists and two blocked shots. She recorded a double-double against Alabama with a career-high tying 22 points and 10 rebounds after just missing the double dip at Vanderbilt with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Knoxville, Tenn., center dished out four assists against the Tide and scored 10 points in the final quarter.
The double-double was her second of the season, while she netted 20-plus points for the third time in 2021-22. The SoCon preseason all-conference selection went 7-for-16 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
She recorded a blocked shot in each game and is ranked fourth all-time at UTC and closing in fast on third.
Cornelius leads the SoCon in defensive rebounds with 8.3 per game and is ranked 11th in the NCAA. She is third in the league for scoring (15.3), field goal percentage (.500), blocked shots (1.2) and minutes played (33.1) and second for rebounds with 9.4 per game.
In the NCAA rankings, Cornelius is 26th for rebounding, 47th for rebounds per game, 41st for free throws made with 35 so far this season and 71st for points scored.
