Lee Softball Rallies To Beat Union 9-6

  • Sunday, February 21, 2021
Freshman Kylie Bohl delivered a three-run homer in the fourth inning and fellow freshman Mallory Orchard came through in the circle in relief to give the Lee softball team a 9-6 comeback victory over Union to seal a GSC Series Championship.

The Bulldogs used a five-run third inning capped by a grand slam from Grace White to take a 6-3 lead. Annalyn Ormsby got the comeback started with her seventh hit of the weekend in the bottom the third to score Laney Harris.

That set the stage for Bohl.
With two on and one out in the fourth inning Bohl electrified the Butler Field crowd with a three shot to over the left field wall to give the Lady Flames the lead for good at 7-6.

Orchard (1-0) made the lead stick with four shutout innings to earn her first career victory. She struck out three, did not walk a batter and scattered six hits. Madison Barnett started a worked three innings giving up six runs on eight hits. She struck out four.

Lily Hatcher went two for two and stole home in the fifth inning to give Lee the all important insurance run. Bohl made it a four RBI day with a run-scoring groundout in the sixth. Harris led off the frame with a leadoff triple down the left field line and came in to score the final run.

"It was great to open GSC play this weekend and getting three wins was even better," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "I was happy with the progress we made from our last games. We had good production up and down the lineup. Our pitching really shined giving us opportunities to win each game. We grew and got better this weekend as a team."

The bulldogs banged out 14 hits in the contest but left eight runners on base. The first four batters in the Union lineup combined 10 of the hits and four runs scored. Samantha McDaniel doubled twice and had three hits for the Bulldogs. Harley Bartholomew added three hits and Alyssa Ward and Sarah Smith had two each.

Gabby Morris (1-4) suffered the loss in the circle. She allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched. She struck out four and walked five.

The Lady Flames improve to 5-2 overall and are 3-0 to start GSC play. Union falls to 1-8 and 0-3 in league action. Up next Lee will travel to Auburn Montgomery for a three-game weekend series against the Warhawks starting Friday at 4 p.m.
