Young Stroke Program Added To Siskin Hospital’s Specialty Services

  • Wednesday, March 10, 2021

Siskin Hospital is announces its Young Stroke Program for patients who are recovering from a stroke.

“More Americans are having strokes at a younger age,” said President and CEO Dr. Matthew Gibson. “The Young Stroke Program helps these younger patients return to fully-functioning lives while addressing risk factors that may have caused the stroke in the first place.”

According to PubMed.gov, the prevalence of ischemic stroke hospitalizations has sharply increased among adolescents and young adults ages 15-44. Ischemic strokes, caused by a blockage in the blood vessel, were found with coexisting risk factors and health risk behaviors of high blood pressure, overweight, smoking, out-of-balance cholesterol and diabetes.

Officials said, "The Young Stroke Program capitalizes on the many Siskin Hospital specialized services and treatments to individualize care for younger patients whose recovery goals may include returning to work, school or parenting.

"Patients may begin recovery as an inpatient and then progress to Siskin Hospital’s Outpatient Therapy Services and the Siskin Health & Fitness Center. Alternatively, stroke survivors may enter the Young Stroke Program as an outpatient.

"Siskin Hospital is the largest provider of rehabilitation for stroke in the region and provides a full continuum of services to patients throughout the recovery process.

"Therapy services are available throughout our continuum of care, including inpatient, outpatient and medical model fitness center. Outpatient treatments are available in person and via telehealth in Cleveland, East Brainerd, Hixson and downtown Chattanooga."
