Carolyn “Carrie” Simmons, a graduating senior, will be entering the career of Music Education at Belmont University in Nashville. Her goal is to become a music teacher. She has volunteered in local schools and civic organizations such as North Boulevard Church of Christ Meals on Wheels Program and the Girl Scouts of Middle TN.
Carrie has a 3.5 GPA and she is a member of the National Honor Society. She is involved with Varsity Golf and Curb Youth Symphony Program. She is the granddaughter of Lorene Hill of Murfreesboro, who is a charter founding member of Psi State TN National Kappa Kappa Iota. Psi State Tennessee National Kappa Kappa Iota members said they are proud to award Carrie with the Lucille Shugart Scholarship award of $1,000.
Due to concerns with COVID-19, Carrie was presented with the scholarship award during the Psi State TN Convention zoom meeting on Saturday.
Psi State TN received its charter on Feb. 11, 1967. Lucille Shugart was the first president and founder. The xcholarship in her honor is awarded to high school seniors planning to enter the field of education.
Barbara Baker, president, Psi State TN, said she is proud to be a member of National Kappa Kappa Iota and the scholarship opportunities available for educators as well as for those who are entering the field of education. The purpose of this organization is to promote the advancement of education by providing an effective network for the exchange of education and teaching practices by educators.
Psi State TN National Kappa Kappa Iota has two chapters in Chattanooga and one chapter in Murfreesboro.
