Barbara Ann Byrd Freytag, 88, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed peacefully on October 31, 2022.

She was born to Lowell Ancil Byrd and Juanita Hatfield Byrd on May 29, 1934. She graduated from Coalfield High School where she was a star member of the basketball team and continued playing basketball through portions of her adult life. She attended and graduated from Knoxville School of Business in 1952.

She was married to James Edward Freytag, Sr. on October 16, 1953 and welcomed their only child, James Edward Freytag, Jr., in December of 1954. She and her husband spent a happy lifetime together up to her recent passing.

Barbara entered the world of banking in 1964 in Clinton, TN with Union Peoples Bank and continued her banking career until her retirement. She moved to Branch Manager and Assistant Vice President with Merchants Bank and Sun Trust once the family relocated in Cleveland, TN. She was a longtime member of Pilot International and served a term as President of the local chapter. She was a dedicated choir member and served as financial treasurer for decades at Hopewell Baptist Church. Her focus at Hopewell was to insure that those in need received help. She intently loved and served her God.

Mrs. Freytag is survived by her husband, James Edward Freytag, Sr., her son, Edward Freytag and daughter-in-law, Joanna, her grandson, Matthew Edward Freytag and his wife, Kellie, two great-grandchildren, Anna Mae and Jackson Edward, extended family Jeanette and Mike Connolly, and a host of family members that loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jackie Byrd Gwin.

Services for Barbara will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Fike-Randolph & Son Funeral Home,
2415 N Ocoee Street, Cleveland, Tn. 37311:
11 a.m. - family only
11:30 a.m. - visitation open to public
1 p.m. - service
1:45 p.m. - depart for Hopewell Cemetery for burial service
