Mayor Wamp's Christmas Courthouse Spending Spree - And Response (3)

  • Friday, December 9, 2022

I think all of the taxpayers in Hamilton County are entitled to see a complete list of the costs related to Mayor Wamp's Christmas tree on the Courthouse lawn this season. And while the county finance department is doing that, please tell us who authorized these expenditures. And the big crane that was necessary to put this tree in place. Mayor Wamp, if you had to pay for this personally, would you have been able to do this? I think not.

And don't forget to include the ramp built for use for one day. One day - seriously? The county hired one of the best contracting firms in Chattanooga to build the ramp, but with hiring the best comes a high price tag. So let's have it all, Weston. How much did we fork over to pump up your ego for this extravagance? You are accountable to every taxpayer, not just your friends, those who voted for you, and those you are trying to impress.

And meanwhile, look around the streets outside the Courthouse. Really look at the people on the streets who have nothing, and yet, here you are, taking from the public coffers acting like the county has unlimited resources for things you want to do. Guess what - the county doesn't have unlimited funds for gimmicks.

Your actions are insulting, reckless, and irresponsible. So just stop it.

Ward Crimmins

(Editor's Note: The Wamp administration said, "The ramp, including labor, was $5,000 and all the lumber is reusable. The tree was $2,200. The lights and ornaments were around $1,600 and will be reused each year. The crane is owned by the county. We were thrilled to bring the community together and create a new tradition.")

In response to that unbelievable assassination of Mayor Wamp over his attempt to bring our community together, I have to say the writer should chill out, and take a look at himself.

I, as a taxpayer, had no problem with erecting a beautiful symbol of the present season that ultimately brings us the birth of Jesus Christ.

I, as a taxpayer, had no problem listening to the local school children singing songs of hope and joy.

I, as a taxpayer, had no problem with seeing little children, and adults, enjoy having their pictures made with Santa Clause and Buddy the Elf.

The event was open to everyone. It was an event that was to help bring together our community.
I do not recall ever seeing the previous writer complain about other events in our county.

I do not recall ever seeing that the writer has ever done anything in our community to bring joy to others.

Maybe the Grinch writer would be happier if those who needed that ramp couldn't attend because of access.

Mr. Crimmins, you are part of the problem we have in our community that makes us want to go beyond protocol and just do the right thing...to make some child happy and filled with laughter after seeing Santa.

I'm sure you can find something else worthwhile to complain about, but don't bring your Grinch attitude to the masses with your character assassination writing.

I agree with Mr. Tucker and want to add that in the day and time we are living in with rising crime rates, the crimes that are more cruel and and horrific, if there is ever a time for some money to be spent on something that many bring out some softer sides, a little compassion, being thoughtful and giving to others, it its definitely now.

If this is the biggest "waste" our mayor does for a while, I'm good with that decision. I pray for those who have hardened hearts, lost loved ones, etc. Maybe they all should go sit and enjoy the beauty and find peace in their lives and love in their hearts.

Merry Christmas.

I have never personally encountered one person that approves of excessive government spending (They obviously exist just not in my social circle or interactions).  With that being said and in my opinion, Mayor Wamp's courthouse tree lighting isn’t it.

There are approximately 368,000 residents of Hamilton County, so the expense of this event breaks down to roughly two pennies per taxpayer at $8,800 and some of which is not a recurring expense.  I whole-heartily agree with Kristy and Rick that our community needs events like this to help bring everyone together in a positive light during these trying times.  I say money well spent and I will gladly send Mr. Crimmins $1, as that should cover the next 50 years of his taxpayer share for this event.

Pick your battles, Mr. Crimmins, as there are bigger fish to fry than Christmas gatherings designed to bring a community together.
